Keylong, Dec 29 (UNI) In view of the likelihood of fresh snowfall and prevailing sub-zero conditions, the district administration has issued a detailed travel advisory urging commuters and tourists to exercise utmost caution while travelling in the region over the coming days.
According to the advisory issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), upper reaches of the valleys and mountain passes are already witnessing extreme cold, with widespread icing reported on several road stretches.
The phenomenon of “black ice” has made roads highly slippery, particularly in shaded areas and high-altitude passes, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
As per the latest weather forecast, there is a moderate to high probability of snowfall in, and between December 29 and 31.
The administration has cautioned that weather conditions may deteriorate rapidly, leading to sudden road closures and disruption of essential services.
Traffic on the Darcha–Shinkula road has been restricted, with movement allowed only for four-wheel-drive vehicles fitted with snow chains and limited to a specified stretch and time window.
Several other routes, including those leading towards high passes, remain closed due to heavy snow accumulation.
The advisory specifically warns commuters against unnecessary travel and stoppages on vulnerable road sections. Travellers have been advised to carry adequate winter gear, snow chains, shovels, food, water and essential medicines, and to move in groups wherever possible. Tourists have been reminded that travel in such conditions will be strictly at their own risk.
Hotel and homestay owners have also been asked to brief guests about the prevailing conditions and safety precautions. The police and Border Roads Organisation have been directed to regulate traffic and keep a close watch on road conditions.
The administration has appealed to the public to strictly follow official advisories and contact the District Emergency Operations Centre in case of any emergency, stressing that adherence to traditional winter travel discipline in the region remains the safest course.
