Lukaku impact forces quick equaliser as Belgium held 1–1 by Egypt

Seattle, June 16 (UNI) Belgium and Egypt played out a 1–1 draw in their opening Group Stage match of the FIFA World Cup at Lumen Field, in a game that swung sharply between both sides before finishing level.
Egypt started brighter and took the lead in the 20th minute when Emam Ashour struck a powerful effort from distance, beating Thibaut Courtois with a well-placed finish. Belgium struggled in the first half, lacking sharpness in the final third despite controlling possession.
The second half changed quickly after Belgium introduced Romelu Lukaku. Within seconds of his arrival, his physical presence caused confusion in the Egyptian defence, leading to Mohamed Hany turning the ball into his own net for 1–1. The equaliser lifted Belgium, who began to push higher up the pitch.
Kevin De Bruyne came close with a free-kick that hit the post, while Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Shobeir produced key saves to deny Belgium’s growing pressure. Egypt also threatened on the counter, particularly through wide attacks, keeping Belgium alert at the back.
In the closing stages, both teams had half-chances but lacked a decisive finish. Belgium registered 15 shots with an xG of 1.31, while Egypt had 14 shots with an xG of 1.07, reflecting a balanced contest overall.
The result leaves both sides on one point after their opening game. Belgium next face Iran, while Egypt take on New Zealand in their second Group Stage fixture.
