Tokyo, Jul 28 (UNI) A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's southern island of Kyushu on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for parts of the region, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The quake struck at 4:27 pm local time (07:27 GMT), with its epicentre located off Kumamoto Prefecture at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
The JMA issued a 1-meter tsunami warning for coastal areas along Ariake Bay and the Yatsushiro Sea, while emergency alerts were activated across several prefectures.
The earthquake registered the maximum Level 7 on Japan's Shindo seismic intensity scale, indicating extremely violent shaking capable of causing severe damage.
The authorities have urged residents in affected coastal areas to move to higher ground and follow evacuation instructions as officials continue to monitor the tsunami threat.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, and assessments are ongoing.
